“Best Lesbian Band.... to come along since

Melissa Etheridge!”

Vaylence

January 2007

By Shannon Bright

In today's music scene where superstars are created by television contests, music moguls picking band members out of a book of model headshots and tween starlets, it is rare to find real talent.   The days of Melissa's and Indigo Girls are virtually over. Such talent has been replaced with ghetto lip sinkers, out of control teenage movie stars who decide they want to be a rock star and anorexic models sign on the dotted line, are brought in to the studio's where digital magic makes them sound like... well Pussycat Dolls!  They are made every day, they are a dime a dozen and the real talent is in the negotiations and desk deals behind the scenes, not in the artistry.

Where are the Melissa's of the new millennium?  Where is that talent?

The Bay Area has a little gem in their pocket, known today as Vaylence.  There certainly is a reason they have been voted the best "Bay Area band that hasn't yet made it" by KGO radio station.  This little trio puts out a big sound and each member brings a true artistry to the table.

Their music is very similar to a Melissa Etheridge style, but with the complete ensemble the tunes and rhythms bring what can only be described as "soulful" rock. The lead vocals have a raspy yet emotional tone, the guitar rhythms give each song a unique personality which are met head on by the deep soul of the tom tom drums. The music brings the emotion of the lyrics to life, and literally reflects the true meanings of the songs.  From "Live Forever" a song about losing a family member, to "With him" which tells a familiar story of a girl who is dating a man, while really wanting to be with a woman.

What really ties you into Vaylence music is the music itself. You quickly find yourself loving the music, all of their music which is unusual in the local talent band pool.  These are not women with midriff, pouting lips and low IQ's, these are women with a rare talent who have had the fortune of finding each other.  They are a very rare find.  Often today's bands have one or two members that stand out in their perspective bands and it is rare that you stumble upon a band in which every member is truly gifted.  That is exactly what you get with Vaylence.

If you get a chance to see Vaylence, you will be pleasantly pleased with what you have discovered.  Their CD will be one of your favorites that you will never get tired of listening to.  You will no doubt be hearing a lot from this band as they rise to the top!
