While
the RRWW is no Dinah Shore, it is still a mini version if
you will, complete with pool parties and lesbians running
amok throughout the whole town.
Years ago the entire town turned into lesbianville, while
its not as inundated today, it is a very happening womens
weekend and many consider it better than Dinah Shore. It's
a little more quaint, a little less crowded, much more "country"
and a lot less sophisticated than Palm Springs. While Dinah
charges $55 to get into their parties with minimum or mediocre
entertainment, Russian River is much more affordable and
the entertainment CAN be top notch. The gals who host
the Dinah events could take some lessons here, seriously.
You are much more likely to enjoy the shows, I particularly
enjoyed the drag king show in 2004. What a fabulous
show and the MC for the event was nothing short of hilarious.
One thing that strikes me is that they women are perhaps
a little less overwhelmed and pretentious then Dinah.
you are likely to walk away with many new friends!
Many
of the women attending the events are from the SF Bay Area
so it is more localized and if you happen to hook up and
you are from the Bay Area, you may actually be hooking up
with someone you can actually date locally.
In
general this year seems a little more organized and planned.
There
is Kayacking, of course the pool parties, a VolleyBall Tournament
at Fife's, Gwen
“Sugar Mama” Avery performed last year at the Main Street
Station, of course again the DragKing Show at ClubFab and
there even organized hiking tours.
Thank
goodness, the Bay Area Community of Women (BACW)
and The Russian River Chamber of Commerce are hosting the
Women's Golf Tournament at the Northwood Golf Course which
by the way was designed by Alister MacKenzie whom designed
an infamous Pebble Beach course. Last year many women were
very disappointed to find there was no tournament scheduled
and surely there will be a few happier women this year!
If
you still need a place to stay, a good bet is the lesbian
owned Russian River
Getaways however make sure to ask for a rental close
to town with little driving as possible. Often the
bigger rental vacation cottages are over looked and very
under rated, so there may still be rentals at very reasonable
prices available.
Fife's
has apparently gone thru a renovation of sorts and has upgraded
linens and furniture, but it may be harder to get a reservation
this late in the game.
I
think it is very funny that the Willows
boasts camping.... but camping at the Willows
is just like camping in your backyard... and that is exactly
what it is! This is not a campground at all.
There are no firepits, a very hard to get to the water and
the small dock and its all a grassy knoll. Hilarious!
If
you want to camp, a twenty minute a drive up to the top
of Armstrong Woods offers real camping.
Fife's
seems to be the "it" place to party this year.
They have the usual DJ and Dancing Friday Nite, the pool
party on Saturday and live girl bands on Saturday nite.
While we missed it last year, ClubFabs
Dragking show and CONTEST is said to be a lot of fun (even
the femmiest of women get a chance to don boys clothing
and have a little fun!). now if thats not your scene, you
are sure to enjoy reknowned Jazz Performer Gwen Avery at
Mainstreet.
Surprisingly
not much is being said about the Triple R
this year? And we are still waiting on word from the
resort an what parties they are hosting.... we will keep
you posted.
The
Golf Tournament
and other activities
|
Of
course, you golfing babes will be hitting the course and
the Golf Tournament is one of the greatest
reason to come to RRWW! Remember to register immediately
if you plan on competing. You can print out your registration
form HERE.
A
very fun activity in Russian river is Kayacking!
The Blue River Kayacking unfortunately requests commtitment
up front ahead of time, so this is not a spur of the moment
activity in which you can enjoy. And the website gives
very limited info on it. It costs $30 but is well worth
it. You can rent your own kayack (hopefully you are
experienced) and have a little fun on your own with California
Rivers. Johnson's Beach, which is family
owned by a very old, very long family line of homophobics,
so do not expect the red carpet to roll out for you here,
but it is a fun beach and they always have canoes,
kayaks and paddleboats for rent.
As well as camping!
Taking
a stroll through Armstrong Woods is highly
recommended! You can enjoy a short hike among breathtaking
scenery, a small creek and tall redwoods whom have survived
hundreds of years. It is just gorgeaous!
HorseBack
Riding is always a fun activity, but horseback
riding through Armstrong Woods is just a fabulous experience!
You can find out about the horseback riding Armstrong Tour
HERE.
There
are even overnite tours!
See
you There!
Remeber
to watch for LBO's crew, get your picture taken and you
may be the next LBO star!
