Russian
River is rich in its history, from the original Native Americans
who called it "Shabaiki" to the Russian fur traders who
named the River "Slavianka" followed by years of logging
and lumber mills that that rendered the area "Stumptown",
and finally the completion of a railroad that connected
Northern California to the rest of the world, who came to
visit "Guerneville" so named after the Guernes, one of the
original families who first settled here.
It
is a beautiful area, very small country town feeling, with
rolling hills and incredible landscaping.
It's
very unique in that the locals are such a range of people.
From the classy older women that run the local drug store
or spa's, to the waitress at the coffee shop to the characters
you will likely find walking down the street that simply
look like they just were in the hill Billy scene in the
movie Deliverance.
Russian
River also happens to one of the gayest
towns in the United States. Gayest... meaning, gay
men. While there are no fast food chains or
convenience stores in Guerneville, gay bars line the downtown
city streets in abundance!
With the exception being the Women's Weekend events, whom
are organized and completely hosted by men, lesbian business
does not thrive in this town. Lesbian tourism is primarily
endorsed exclusively for the Women's Weekend events.
See our review on the events to get in on the fun and the
down and dirty scoop.
