Upcoming Lesbian Comedians

Shann Carr & Poppy Champlin

Look at all these lesbian comedians coming out of the woodwork!

I am sure that when Ellen Degeneres came out she had no idea that she was opening the gay floodgates! And boy didn’t she! She was our canary in a coal mine and she survived. Now not only do we have several gay themed television programs but gay comedians are coming out in drones! Especially the lesbians! I guess being a lesbian is funny.

So, you have heard of Margeret Cho and Suzanne Westenhoefer… but what about upcoming stars, Shann Carr and Poppy Champlin? Watch out for these two… someday their names will be a household name and you will be able to say, you saw them when.

Shann Carr is one funny lady. She is the executive producer of GirlMoxie Studios, the creator of the Gay TV Comedy show, Out for Laughs. She is known for her performances on the Atlantis Cruise tours, which are primarily gay men and as you can imagine make for some very funny material.

We saw Shann perform in a small club in Northern California. Shann is a straightforward comedian. She does not use props or crazy antics but instead endears her audience by a more laid-back manner telling stories of her adventures as if they were all friends. She is a comedian who’s audience relates well to. One thing that I enjoyed most about Shanns show was that almost her entire show revolved around being gay and our daily lives, loves and sex lives as lesbians. You will find yourself in the audience not only laughing hysterically, but nodding your head as you agree with what she is saying! Isn’t that fun?

You can visit Shann’s site and find her tour schedule at www.shanncarr.com

Another up coming comedian is Poppy Champlin.

The styles between these two women are as different as night and day. While Shann is more laid back, Poppy is right out there, in your face, funny! She recently performed at the Dinah Shore Queens of Comedy and is slowly making an impact in the comedic world. If you have virgin ears and not used to raunchier materials, you may find Poppy’s act a little naughty. But, the crowd that I was with thoroughly enjoyed her show.

My wife and I were lucky enough to obtain a CD of one of her shows in Utah. While she does not emphasize her lesbianism in it, she does have a way of heckling the men in the crowd who were very entertained not realizing… that joke was about them! We played her CD in our car on a road trip with several of our friends, honestly not expecting much, I mean, usually listening to a tape of a show rather than live is just not as funny as in person, but the CD ended up making our trip less monotonous and funnier as we all sat, listened and laughed. We constantly found ourselves missing a line and reversing the CD, "Hey, I missed that!".

You can reach Poppy at her website www.poppycockprod.com.

Not only is it great to support our community, but isn’t it refreshing to witness such fabulous saphic talent, rising from that coal mine that Ellen pioneered for us?! I am sure she is proud.
